bullet  General Notes:

Samuel Crosby

Samuel Crosby, born 1804/9, died between 1880/1900. Samuel Crosby first appeared on the census schedules of St. Luk's Parish in 1840 where he would remain for more than 40 years. No burial site has been located but a number of his descendants ate buried at the Grimes Cemetery, Grays, South Carolina. One family, Enoch and Elizabeth Hull, remained as close neighbors for more than ten years an am inclined to believe that Elizabeth Hull was nee Crosby; indeed, her first son was named Samuel. Samuel Crosby was married at least twice, possibly three times. One wife may have been Lorena Priester, but at the time of writing of his Will, 30 March 1874, he was married to Mary (last name unknown). Between the singing of his Will in 1874 and the 1880 Census, they were divorced, a most unusual occurrence for that era. Samule's Will is to be found in the Office of Probate Judge, Hampton County, South Carolina, Package #116 but an abstract follows:

"To may beloved wife, Mary Crosby, $10.00. as her portion of the estate.

"To my daughter, Adaline Amanda Crosby, 2 cows and calves or yearlings, as the case may be.

"To my son, John M. Crosby, 2 cows and calves or yearlings, and 1 bay horse named 'Boney.'

"To my daughter, Laura Rebecca Crosby, 2 cows and calves or yearlings, as the case may be.

"To my son, Barney B. Crosby, 2 cows and calves or yearlings, and 1 bay horse named 'Pilot.'

"To may granddaughter, Eliza S. Williams, 2 cows and calves or yearlings, as the case may be.

"I ordain that the residue and remainder of my personal property, after funeral expense just payment of debts, be equally divided between all my said heirs, except my wife. Also I appoint my worth (word illegible) and trusted friend, Owen J. Harvey, Executor of this my Will and Testment and do give unto him the sum of $30.00 in consideration of the pains and trouble he will have in the execution of this my Will.

Signed by X. Witnesses: F.J. Poeaohiz(?), Oscar Harvey, and J.H. Lightsey."
