Alexander Holden married 1st Mary Emma Derden, daughter of Marcus "Mark" Derden and Dorothy Hill. Mary Emma was a granddaughter of James Derden and Sarah Bobbit.

Alexander served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, enlisting in Columbia SC on 9 Jan 1862. He was still on roll call during Jan/Feb 1863. He was a Private, Co. E 22nd Infantry. He went into service after the death of Mary Emma, leaving two young sons, John S. and Henry P.E Holden. His second wife was Elizabeth Carnes. His third wife was Ella Sims. Alexander had large families by both wives. Alexander is buried in Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Buford community of Lancaster SC, near his mother and father. His tombstone was made by his grandson, John Pete Holden. These words are inscribed on the tombstone: "He freely gave his service for his country."
