Shortly after Samuel Hammond and Martha Biggart were married, they separated because of the difference in age, as she was about 5 years older than Samuel. Samuel left and went to Florida with his younger brother Francis Rawleigh Hammond and never returned to South Carolina. After Samuel left the state, Martha gave birth to a son, Samuel Napoleon Hammond, later called "Boss". This child was raised by his grandmother, Susan Biggart, and lived a long useful life in the Stoneboro community of Kershaw County, South Carolina. The life of Samuel N. Hammond in Florida has not been traced. It is believed that he settled near Hawthorne, Florida, for it was in this vacinity that his younger brother Francis found his bride.
