General Notes:
Francis Raleigh Hammond was a soldier of the War between the States serving four years most of which was in active duty. After the war, he returned to Heath Springs to his family, which consisted of a wife and a young son. While a young man about seventeen, he went to Florida to seek fortune and there in Hawhorne, he met his future wife, Miss Amanda Caroline Sanders, born October 31, 1842 and died April 8, 1917, the daughter of William Sanders. On January 17, 1858, they were married, she being just over the fifteenth year of her age and he only twenty. After marriage he returned with his new bride to live on the farm of his mother, Mrs. Mitilda Hammond. It is evident that the early years of this marriage was lived in a joint farming operation with his brother Peter Burford Hammond and his mother. Records indicate that Francis Raleigh Hammond began his own farming on land near the old Russell Place, shortly after he returned from the Civil War. He never attained a position higher than a small farmer, but many people of this day speak of his small stature, kind dispostion and affection for his family.
The following proof is offered that Francis Rawleigh, was the son of Francis Hammond and Matilda Brewer.
a. The Bible records of Samuel Burford Hammond, show the birth of Mary Melvina Hammond, February 23, 1829. Her grave is found beside that of Matilda Hammond in the same plot at Beaver Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Pearl Hammond Neely of Rock Hill, says "I remember only one sister of my grandfather Frank Hammond and she was Aunt Molly Perry". Mary Melvinia Hammond married Alexander Perry.
b. The census record of Kershaw County, South Carolina for the year 1850, shows Matilda Hammond, aged 41 years as head of family, living with Samuel Hammond aged 14 years and Francis Hammond aged 12.
